Also known by his other names as Francois Ghislain, Rene Magritte was a renowned Belgian surrealist painter. He gained popularity for some very witty and quite thought provoking pictorials. His passion for painting started when his family moved to Chatelet where he was enrolled in art class. In 1913, his mother killed himself and the rough road began.

In 1916, he quit high school and enrolled in an Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. It is here that he started nourishing his artistic abilities in drawing, ornamental composition and painting. He loved to paint and draw about the Sambre river where his mother committed suicide.

Between 1922 and 1923 Rene meets and marries Georgette Berger. After experimenting on several artistic styles, his meeting with Georgette changes his style. She actually becomes his biggest inspiration. Magritte began painting objects that had visible details. He tried to place situations to the real world, as a way of communicating something. His first piece ‘nocturne’ was the first to portray this.

Rene and his wife later moved to Paris and this is where all his works of Surrealists became more vivid. Some of his famous works include ‘the black magic’, ‘the rape’, ‘the marches of summer’ and many more. The Treachery of Images

World famous paintings - The original name of this painting is La trahison des images and it was finished in the late 1920s. Some enthusiasts went far enough to rename this painting as The Treason of Images. Artworks like these have spread the name and fame of the Belgian genius commonly known as René Magritte. The painting features a pipe. Beneath the pipe Magritte painted some amazing words - "Ceci n'est pas une pipe." In plain English, this will read "This isn’t a pipe." What the painter wanted to imply is that, the painting itself isn’t a real pipe, rather it’s an image of a pipe.

Some literary critics of France reviewed this painting. For instance, French philosopher Michel Foucault illustrated the paradox in his book. Some called it an artistic work on human cognition and consciousness.

Time Transfixed 

Also know as La Durée poignardée, yet another painting from Rene Magritte paintings. This one was finished in late 1930s and considered high quality oil on canvas painting. Many critics believe that this painting upheld the surrealist entity of René Magritte. Today, this painting is the property of the Art Institute of Chicago. You can see it at the newly built Modern Wing of this museum. 

This painting was among the many that were meant for surrealist patron (and a prime supporter of Magritte) Edward James. From Rene Magritte this was the 2nd painting given to James. He decorated his renowned London ballroom with this painting. However, the 1st one was the surreal portrait of this James. Pretty interestingly, this painting was called - Not to be Reproduced. However, Time Transfixed had originally been bought by an Art Institute in the 1970s when James was trying to raise capital for building a surrealist sculpture garden called Las Pozas. 

Golconda 

In our list, this one is the 3rd one among Rene Magritte paintings. In original French, this one is called – Golconde and is a famous oil painting on typical canvas. René Magritte finished this painting in 1953. Today, this painting is housed in Texas, Houston at the Menil collection.

This piece of art depicts an interesting scene some apparently identical men who are dressed in black overcoats along with bowler hats. These three men look as if they were floating just like some helium balloons (nevertheless you can’t trace any sign of motion), against the backdrop of some buildings and blue sky. These men are actually spaced in an ingenious hexagonal grid and they are facing the view point while receding back within the grid layers.

The Hero in Rene Magritte Paintings. Rene Magritte was born on 21st November, 1898. This was raised in Belgium, in a town named Lessines. They included artists such as Jeff Beck, Styx and Jackson Browne. His goal for his works was specifically to challenge the preconditioned perceptions of reality. It was also meant to change viewers and make them hypersensitive to their surroundings.

Rene’s mother was supposedly found dead with a covering on her face. This is an image that is so much frequent in his works. He drew a lot of motivation from the death of his mother. Rene Magritte Paintings in 1927–1928 are mainly of people obscuring their faces with a cloth. This shows how remorseful he was when he lost his mother. However, it was a source of creativity and fame for his paintings.

Rene Magritte Paintings date about 1915. They were really impressionistic in style. From 1916 to 1918 he did study at the Académie Royale in Brussels. However, he found the instruction much uninspiring. His 1918–1924 paintings were greatly influenced by Futurism. The offshoot of Cubism was also a motivation behind his works. Rene Magritte Paintings, real name Rene François Ghislain Magritte, was born on November 21st, 1898 in Lessines, a small French-speaking town in Belgium located in the Wallonia region. He grows in a family of three children of which he was the elder one. The childhood of Rene Magritte is however difficult and marked by the suicide of his mother who threw herself off a bridge. This loss will remain an outstanding source of creation because it is found on several Magritte's paintings, we can see in his art, indeed, rather often covered faces with a shroud in many paintings or the image of her mother who was covered with her nightdress when his body was found. Rene Magritte will then develop a certain interest for the Cubism Art Movement, and he will be especially inspired by the work of De Chirico, a contemporary Italian Painter. In Paris He will be introduce to the Surrealism Art Movement founded and directed by André Breton. He will then get acquainted with famous cotemporary artists like Paul Eluard, Joan Miro and of Salvador Dali. Rene Magritte will died of a cancer in August 15th, 1967, in Brussels, leaving behind more than a thousand works of Art. Among them, "L'espion" (1924), "L'au-delà" (1938), "Heureux présage" (1949) and "L'heureux donateur"(1966).
